About us

We welcome you in the Kowalke Family!

Since 1981 the Fischereihafen Restaurant is inseparably linked to the name Kowalke.

With his caring nature Rüdiger Kowalke created an oasis of hospitality in which guests from Hamburg as well as international guests fell at home.

Within few years Rüdiger Kowalke turned the restaurant into a top address for fish lovers from all over the world.

On July 1st 1997 his son Dirk took over the business.

Since then, Dirk Kowalke is tenant and owner of the Fischereihafen Restaurant. With skill and flair he manages to combine tradition and the modern.

When he joined, the very familiar atmosphere in the restaurant was born. Not only because father and son get along very well and form a strong team that works hand in hand  for more than 17 years now, but also because Susanne Kowalke, married to Rüdiger since 1999, looks after the welfare of the guests in her warm-hearted and loving manner. She is the good soul of the house and many admire her as the ‘most charming host in town’.

Finally Susanne’s son Benjamin Kast (“Benny”) rounds the picture since he joined as Dirk’s right hand in 2011 and secured the’ Kowalke Credo ‘ to always have at least one family member being present in the restaurant during the main business hours.

In 2011 Jens Klunker followed his father Wolf-Dieter who was Chef de cuisine in the Fischereihafen Restaurant since 1981 and now enjoys his well-earned retirement.

Since 2012 Jens Klunker and Michael Scherer are the dual leaders in the kitchen. Scherer had started his career as Commis de Cuisine in the Fischereihafen Restaurant beginning of the nineties. He finally ‘came home’ after having worked at high class addresses like ‘Insel’ at Alsterufer, Hotel Adlon in Berlin and the Süllberg in Hamburg. In addition Michael Sauter in his role as vice chef supports the team with his great experience.

The recipe for success – then and now: The traid between maximum quality, warm-hearted service and an attractive price-performance ratio. Skillful hands prepare what comes from the sea and has scales, crusts or shells.

The choice of food is as versatile as the guests themselves. Business men, families, VIP’s from politics, show business or sports enjoy the delicious creations the kitchen conjures in the stylish ambience.

Service at the Fischereihafen Restaurants already starts in front of the door.  The friendly car attendant welcomes the guests and takes care of parking their car, if desired.

Our guests are ‘king’ no matter if they visit us frequently or for the first time.
Those who want to be nearest to the river Elbe choose to dine on our beautiful balcony, if the temperature allows it. Approximately 50 guests can enjoy the grand view over harbour and in and outgoing ships.

Culinary tradition and modern style are in perfect balance at the Fischereihafen Restaurant. The menu offers classic regional dishes as the famous smoked eel filet on scrambled eggs with herbs or the center piece of turbot with Pommery mustard sauce as well as modern and exotic creations for any taste.

Exquisite Sushi and Sashimi selections are as popular as crispy Gambas on spicy glass noodle salad or peppered tuna with honey-soy sauce with mashed Wasabi. Oysters, lobster and caviar are of curse part of the permanent offer.

The business lunch is a hit itself.
From 11.30 a.m. til 3.00 p.m. a constantly changing little menu offers small prices and great taste!

The Fischereihafen Restaurant offers warm meals from 11.30 a.m. til 10.00 p.m. every day, on Fridays and Saturdays til 10.30 p.m. (exception: December 24th – only open from 11.30 a.m. til 3.00 p.m.) Our bar is open longer, of course.
